Compulsory Retirement Ages - Objective Justification (December 2006)

Police officers are office holders and not employees. This meant that when the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 came into force on 1 October 2006, any age used as a compulsory retirement age, including the new retirement age of 65 introduced for employees by those regulations, had to be objectively justified. This document sets out the justification for the compulsory retirement ages for police officers.
