Performance and Measurement

Performance Monitors 2003/04

The 2003/04 Police Performance Monitoring report showed substantial reductions in the key target crimes of burglary, vehicle crime and robbery, the percentage of offences brought to justice and a significant decrease in the numbers of people worried about becoming the victims of crime.

The first set of performance monitors was published in February 2003. For the first time, these allowed the public to gain a rounded view of the achievements of their local force across a number of areas of policing business in relation to similar forces elsewhere in the country. The ‘performance monitor’ diagrams provided a quick, visual summary representation of the balance of performance for a force.

The second Police Performance Monitoring Report (2002/03) was published in October 2003. The second publication has been expanded considerably. The addition of bar charts to the original monitor diagrams gives a more detailed breakdown of the comparison of forces with their peers. This is further enhanced by the inclusion of two years’ worth of performance information, which indicates changes in police performance since last year.

The 2002/03 Performance Monitors set the baseline of performance against which the success of Home Office Public Service Agreement Target 2 (to improve the performance of all police forces) will be judged.
