Criminality Information Unit (CIU)
The Criminality Information Unit follows up on the recommendations made by Sir Ian Magee’s Review of Criminality Information.
The review, published in July 2008, made recommendations based on a widespread consultation across the whole public protection network, including staff at the frontline of many of the agencies and services.
The first step is to publish a government-wide response, along with an action plan, in the autumn.
Background
In 2007, the Home Secretary commissioned a review of criminality information following an inquiry into the handling of notifications by other European countries of convictions incurred by UK citizens.
The review, led by Sir Ian Magee, made a number of recommendations to increase the efficiency and effectiveness with which criminality information flows across the whole public protection network and to directly assist staff working at the frontline.
Criminality information is defined in the review as any information which is, or may be, relevant to the prevention, investigation, prosecution or penalising of crime.
The unit
The unit includes the established criminal records policy team, along with an international team to provide strategic oversight and guidance on the flow of criminality information between the UK and the rest of the world.
The Criminality Information Unit is also overseeing implementation of the outstanding recommendations from the Bichard Inquiry report.
